Why it has more than one name
Govardhan Pūjā and Annakūṭ name the same day — the second name meaning the mountain of food built to stand for the hill. It falls the day after Dīvālī in the north; in Gujarat the same morning opens the new year.

Why is a hill worshipped instead of a god?
That is the story. A village was persuaded to thank the hill that actually fed its cattle rather than the god who was owed the offering by custom — and then had to be sheltered when the rain came for it.
Why is the food piled into a mountain?
The Annakūṭ is the hill, rebuilt in food. If a child has ever asked why the pile is shaped that way, the story is the answer.
